The Most Non-Invasive Skin Tools

There’s a lot of misinformation about the tools you should be using on your face. Internet trends about the next best tool to peel and scrape away at your skin are constant. But the truth is, skin care doesn’t have to be as complicated as it seems. With the proper skin tools, you can achieve beautiful results with no damage.

Keep reading this guide to learn:

  • The best skin tools to use
  • How DIY skin care routines can be harmful
  • Why you should invest in facial spa treatments for specialized care

What Tools Should I Use on My Skin?

Before you jump into a 15-step routine full of scrubs and dermaplaning razors, take a step back and think about the skin care tools you’re using. If you already have a pretty decent collection of chemical skin care products, you don’t have to go overboard with physical tools.

Regardless of your skin type, your at-home skin care routine should be as simple as possible with tools that protect your skin rather than harm it. We’ve created a list of some of the best non-invasive skin tools to use at home that leave your face feeling as smooth, hydrated, and lifted as possible. These tools mimic the advanced services we use in our SalonSpa skin care service.

LED Light Therapy

LED Light Therapy emulates skin care treatments you would get at a spa or dermatologist’s office, but on a much smaller scale. It’s a relaxing procedure that’s great for rejuvenating the skin by treating acne, minimizing the appearance of redness and wrinkles, and regulating one’s natural oil production.

Light therapy has also been shown to have anti-aging effects, as it’s been widely used for decades to boost the cell renewal process. Many estheticians have used this treatment as a final step for following up after more invasive procedures like skin peels and microneedling.

Gua Sha Tools

Gua Sha is an ancient Chinese medicine practice where a smooth-edged tool is used to gently scrape areas of the skin to improve circulation. While it’s traditionally been used to reinvigorate a person’s “Chi” energy and scrape away illness, it’s since evolved to become a type of facial treatment that promotes healing.

The tools Gua Sha uses range from anything as simple as a coin to a wooden spoon. Because it’s such a versatile method, Gua Sha tools can be used with most skin care products like cleansers, serums, and masks.

Facial Cupping

As a miniature version of body cupping, facial cupping is shown to have the same regenerative benefits. This method uses small soft cups to create a suction effect and pull blood into a specific area of skin underneath. Ideally, it brings fresh blood to the surrounding tissue and promotes the formation of new blood vessels.

This treatment eases muscle tension and increases circulation to the skin cells to promote skin repair. For people struggling with a duller skin tone, cupping is great for promoting a brighter complexion. While there are plenty of at-home cupping kits to get started with, you should first seek the guidance of a professional to make sure you’re following the proper technique.

Facial Massagers

There are many types of facial massagers, like jade rollers, silicone facial brushes, Kansa wands, and cryo ice globes. These skin tools are closely related and serve similar purposes for addressing skin conditions and promoting hydrated skin. However, each method is used for different reasons and works best with different types of chemicals.

Silicone facial brushes, for example, are optimal for cleansing and should be used as part of a double cleansing routine. Cryo ice globes, on the other hand, specifically target acne scars and sensitive skin and work well in conjunction with chemical peels.

Facial massagers are among the most common skin care tools to use at home, and for good reason. They feel great and can be used at many stages of a skin care routine, whether it’s prep, cleansing and exfoliating, or moisturizing. While there’s debate about the effectiveness of these skin tools, no one can deny their therapeutic benefits.

Facial Yoga

Facial yoga technically isn’t a facial “tool” at all, but it is a technique that helps reduce muscle tension and delay the occurrence of fine lines and wrinkles. Probably the least-invasive facial technique yet, facial yoga is an older Eastern approach that involves a series of exercises and stretches for the muscles in the face.

Fans of this technique swear by its circulation benefits that strengthen and tone the face’s muscles, reduce puffiness, and make one’s skin glow.

Why DIY Solutions Are a Slippery Slope

While these techniques can work wonders for your skin, you should avoid being duped by every skin care technique that’s out there. The latest TikTok trend may sound nice, but if it’s not backed by the professional expertise of a dermatologist or esthetician, it might not be the best for your skin.

The idea of creating a skin care routine that works can be exciting, but before anything, you should seek the assistance of a professional to better understand your skin type and the kind of problems you’re experiencing. It very well may turn out that you only need to work with a couple of skin tools.

At the very least, you should save the more gentle treatments for home and leave the harsher treatments to the experts. If you’re overloading your face with multiple abrasive tools, you could be destroying your skin barrier and delaying your progress much further.

The Benefits of Investing in Professional Facials

The tools used in facial treatments are specially formulated to compliment your skin. When you go in for a signature facial at your designated esthetician’s office, you’re signing up for a service that will:

  • Use industry-grade, professional equipment
  • Have a sterilized and sanitary environment
  • Take into account your skin type, habits, and skin goals
  • Carefully use invasive techniques in the safest way possible
  • Keep you on a routine schedule for maintaining your skin’s progress
