Your Complete Guide to Eyelash Extension Styles

If you’ve engaged in any beauty-related content lately, you’ve probably seen and heard discussions about eyelash extensions. Beauty gurus everywhere swear that no makeup look is complete without a beautiful lash to bring out the beauty of the eyes, and we wholeheartedly agree.

If you’re new to the world of lash extensions, let this be your guide to understanding:

  • What eyelash extensions are, and how the process works
  • How lash extensions can compliment your eye
  • The type of eyelash extension styles you can get

What Are Eyelash Extensions?

Eyelash extensions are semi-permanent faux mink, silk, or synthetic fibers that are attached to natural eyelashes to create a fuller and more defined look.

Can I See a Specialist? How Do They Do Eyelash Extensions?

The eye extension process begins when a certified lash artist takes individual fibers that resemble natural eyelashes and, using glue, applies them to each lash of the client’s eye. Unlike cheaper and less durable strip lashes, lash extensions are longer-lasting and can be worn for two to four weeks.

Why Are Eyelash Extensions So Popular?

Lash extensions are attractive to people for many reasons:

  • They help with naturally thin lashes – If your natural eyelashes aren’t as full and defined as you’d like, extensions can be a huge confidence booster.
  • Lash extensions cut down on makeup time – Curating the perfect eye makeup look can be time consuming, and if you aren’t the most skilled with precisely applying strip lashes, having extensions takes care of half the work for you.
  • They can handle getting wet (After 48 hours) – Unlike strip lashes which can easily melt off your face on an extra humid day, lash extensions can handle much more moisture—that is, after they’ve had 48 hours to set.
  • You can have a bold, dramatic look all the time – With eyelash extensions, you can have a beautiful, striking look 24/7. Whether you’re at the store, on vacation, or on a date night, you can always look and feel your best.

What Type of Eyelash Extensions Can I Get?

Depending on your needs and desired length and volume, there are lots of lash extension styles you can opt for. Here’s some of the most popular styles we’re seeing in 2023.

Cat Eye

Probably the most popular lash style, the cat eye look is shorter on the inner corner of the eye and gradually elongates toward the outer corner. This classic lash style is perfect for pretty much any eye shape and does a great job at creating a lifted look.

Fox Eye

The “older sister” of the cat eye, the fox eye lash look is all the rage right now on social media. The lashes are still shorter on the inner corner, but the outer corner is played on even more for a full-volume, angled look. When paired with a great eyeliner, this makes a sultry and feline look.

Wispy Eye

The wispy eye has varying short and long lash lengths that creates a light, feathered look. This soft eye shape is perfect for lifting naturally downturned eyes.

Open Eye

An open eye look refers to extensions that are longer at the center of the eye, creating a more “open” and rounded look overall.

Doll Eye

The doll eye look is very similar to an open-eyed look, but much less subtle. These lashes are longest at the center, shortest at the inner corner, and tend to be medium length at the outer corners. People with almond shaped or deep-set eyes pull off this style well.

Staggered Lash Extensions

Also referred to as “the Kim K look,” staggered lash extensions are one of the more modern styles that involves the stylist alternating between longer and shorter extensions. If you want, you can have your lash artist create staggered lashes in other lash shapes, like the cat eye or doll eye looks.

Natural Lashes

Many people prefer to get just a simple touch up to their eye area that closely mimics their natural length pattern. This look is extremely realistic, and if done with the right lash artist, can make the wearer look like they’re only wearing mascara.
