Hair Care Tips to Stop You From Ruining Your Tresses

If you’ve been frying your hair with a flat iron every week or trying every variation of a pineapple and yogurt juice concoction, you’ve probably been applying a lot of unnecessary pressure. Let’s dial it back.

Check out this guide for tips on maintaining your daily hair care without it working against you. Find out:

  • The biggest hair care mistakes we tend to make
  • Common hair products that can make your hair flourish
  • How to create a daily hair care routine that works

Where Your Daily Hair Care Routine Might Go Wrong

Everyone wants the best for their hair, but unfortunately, there’s a lot of misinformation out there. While you might be under the impression that you’re doing the best for your hair, you could be making costly mistakes that sacrifice your length retention, volume, density, scalp health, and more.

The Most Frequent Hair Care Mistakes

We’ve compiled a list of ten of the most common hair care mistakes. While everyone’s hair type and texture are unique, we believe these hair care tips can apply to any situation.

  1. You’re washing your hair too frequently—or on the other hand, not enough.
Clean hair should be the foundation of any hair care routine, but if you’re washing your hair too often, you risk stripping your locks of its natural oils which could leave your hair brittle. On the other hand, not washing enough contributes to the buildup of dirt and other particles that will irritate your scalp.
  2. You’re using the wrong temperature to wash your hair.
Many people don’t realize this, but you should avoid washing your hair in scalding hot water. Wet hair is already fragile in this state, but water that is way too hot can open up too much of the cuticle and dry out your hair. This is especially true for colored hair.
  3. You’re conditioning your hair from the roots instead of the ends.
If you’re conditioning your hair at the roots, you’re ignoring the entire purpose of the conditioner. Applying conditioner at the roots rather than the ends as intended contributes to an excess of oil buildup, which is the last thing your scalp needs.
  4. You aren’t deep conditioning.
While on the topic of conditioning, if you aren’t taking the time to deep condition every now and then by allowing your conditioner to sit on your hair for up to 30 minutes, you’re missing out on some great opportunities to soften and promote elasticity in your hair.
  5. You’re drying your hair incorrectly.
It doesn’t matter what pop culture shows you—there’s definitely an incorrect way to dry your hair. If you’re tangling your hair by throwing it into a big ball atop your head and rubbing your towel around, you’re setting yourself up for a world of hurt.
  6. You’re neglecting your regular trims.
All loose hair needs to be trimmed eventually, and unlike what the expert marketers might tell you, there’s no saving split ends. They have to go! When you forgo trimming your ends every three months or so, you risk the damaged hair shaft from the split ends continuing to run up the length of your hair.
  7. You’re overusing heat products, and with no form of heat protection.
Abusing heat products can turn into a certain death for your hair. There’s no greater detriment to healthy hair than irreversible heat damage. If you’re the type to bust out the blow dryer or flat iron every other day, keep this in mind.
  8. You aren’t thinking about dandruff.
Dandruff can naturally occur more frequently for some more than others, but ignoring it in your hair care routine could have severe adverse effects. An overgrowth of dandruff could trigger an excessive amount of itching and scratching, plus, an entire extra layer of particles could block normal hair growth.
  9. You’re putting your hair in too many tight styles.
Your hair can’t breathe if it’s constantly pulled up into tight styles like high ponytails. Not only is this detrimental to the edges of your hair, but the restriction causes tension and can directly lead to hair loss.
  10. You’re going to bed with wet hair.
Even if you’re attempting to do a deep conditioning treatment, it’s best to avoid going to bed with damp hair for a few reasons. For one, the hair is much more vulnerable when wet, and two, this could adversely affect your health. The last thing you want is to wake up with a cold because of a beauty routine.
