Tips to Prepare Your Hair for Spring

Spring Hair Preparation

The winter months are extremely harsh on your hair, which is why it’s important to take extra good care and start spring preparation early. The spring and summer months are when we want our hair to be shiny, feel soft, and look effortlessly beautiful. But if you don’t take proper care of your hair in the winter, you won’t get the look you were hoping for.

This post has tips for you to prep your hair for spring and help you understand why it’s important to do so.

Why Is Winter Your Hair’s Number One Enemy?

From frizz to split ends to dry hair, we’ve all experienced the repercussions of cold weather on our hair. No matter what hair type you have, extreme winter weather is no friend to your hair, and it’s important to take the proper precautions so your hair is healthy and beautiful for spring.

Here are a few things your hair might suffer from when cold weather hits.

Static

According to trichologist (“hair doctor”) Philip Kingsley, when temperatures drop and the air becomes dry, your hair picks up an electrical charge that causes it to stand up. This lack of moisture in the air results in little volume or movement in curls. In addition to the dry air and colder weather, heavy jackets, scarves, and wooly collars will cause flyaway strands.

Dry, Itchy Scalp

Just as your skin gets dry in the winter from indoor heating and dry air outside, your scalp gets dry too. When your scalp becomes dry, it’s likely to itch and the skin may even flake off.

Split Ends

Split ends occur when the hair is too dry, and because cold weather causes dry hair, winter may be the culprit behind your split ends during these months.

Healthy Hair Tips: Prepare Your Hair for Spring

There are plenty of ways to prepare your hair for spring and avoid any serious damage that winter may cause to your hair. Here are a few tips and tricks to add to your hair care routine that will keep your hair healthy all winter long (and thus healthy for the rest of the year, too)!

Boost the Scalp

In the winter, hair experts say that it’s best to wash your hair less often. Instead, use more moisturizing conditioners. The best way to give your scalp a boost when it’s dry is by using a clarifying shampoo for a deep clean.

Try the Ouidad Superfruit Renewal Clarifying Cream Shampoo. Or, if your scalp is already really dry, you might want to consider a liquid scalp and itch treatment.

Visit Your Salon for a Trim

Winter is the perfect time to visit your salon for a trim, because your hair is more prone to split ends and other damage. Even if you don’t want to drastically change the length of your hair, cutting less than an inch can do wonders for the health of your hair and save it from any further damage that split ends may cause in the long run.

Use a Split End Binding Cream

If you don’t have time to go to the salon right now, but you still want to bind those split ends, consider a split end binding cream. There are a variety of products to help with split ends, and many actually repair the split by fusing it back to the strand if you continue to use them regularly.

Switch to a Hydrating Shampoo and Conditioner

Because dry hair is inevitable during the winter months, it should be a no-brainer to switch to a more hydrating shampoo and conditioner. You may even want to incorporate a mask with hydrating ingredients such as coconut milk and natural oils such as argan oil. It’s also smart to sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase in the winter, as this will help your hair retain any moisture that you’re putting back into it with product.
