Current Makeup Trends and Hairstyles Taking the Internet by Storm in 2023

Summer 2023 is near, and the beauty landscape is changing rapidly. We’re seeing a nice blend of the practical and daring, from natural minimal makeup looks and hair trends that reigned supreme in 2022 to more creative beats that embrace self-expression and challenge the boundaries of tradition. From the looks of our Instagram and TikTok feeds, this is a time of true beauty innovation.

Keep reading for our list of 10 makeup and hair trends we’re totally obsessed with right now.

1. Cool-Toned Eyeshadows

Ultra-warm eye makeup is out, and the beauty gurus are embracing cool-toned eyeshadow shades like cool browns, mauve, navy blue, smokey greys, and blush pinks. This creates a casual, lived-in look that radiates a dreamy and enchanting aura.

To take this eye look to the next level, pencil in a little bit of black eyeliner under the lid and blend it to create a nice smudged effect.

2. Pastel Makeup Looks

This makeup trend is as simple as it is colorful and expressive. Reminiscent of color trends of decades past when baby blues and soft pinks were all the rave, you can boost your mood by smudging any bright eyeshadow shade across your lids and up to your crease.

The pastel look is so easy, you don’t even have to limit it to eyeshadow. Consider making your look pop with a simple mascara and colorful eyeliner. Or, apply a purple or pink blush to your cheeks, forehead, and chin, and finish with neon lipstick for a maximalist effect.

3. ‘90s Hair and Makeup

Everyone loves the ‘90s, and as one of the most influential decades in pop culture and fashion, its impact on the beauty industry is no different. There always seems to be a trend that comes back from this era, and this year the glam grunge look is all the rage. In the makeup scene, this means a little less hyper femme and more smudged black eyeliners and eyeshadow, matte tones, and chocolate and brown lip liners. And, of course, we can’t forget the heavy mascara to make the lashes stand out against these bold looks.

The ‘90s influence isn’t limited to makeup, either. The cosmetology industry has embraced longer and styled cuts with plenty of layers and barreled bangs reminiscent of the classic supermodel look. Also popular is “The Rachel 2.0” style, a shoulder-length layered bob aptly named after Jennifer Aniston’s beloved character in the hit sitcom “Friends.”

4. Siren Eyes

As a fun but sultry take on the traditional smudged winged liner, many beauty enthusiasts are opting for the foxy eye look that took over in the summer of 2022 and is still plowing ahead at full steam. One of the easiest ways to replicate this trend is by lining the inner corner of the eye, applying a waterproof eyeliner pencil on the tip of an angled liner blush, then finally stamping it on the outer corners of the eye for the crispiest cat-eyed wing.

5. Even More Blush

Blush is one of the best ways to bring life into the skin and complete a makeup look, and the beauty gurus know it. One of the biggest TikTok makeup trends right now is the mid-tone blushing craze, which simply blurs the blush and under-eye makeup together for a seamless, airbrushed look.

Beauty enthusiasts aren’t just using the traditional pressed powder blush, either. With the increasing popularity of products like Rare Beauty’s Soft Pinch Liquid Blush and Tarte’s Limited-Edition Cheek Stain Water-Infused Blush, people are embracing multiple makeup application techniques and product types for an even better look.

6. Futuristic Metallic Looks

Perhaps the current discussion around AI and the future of machine-learning technology has impacted the beauty industry, or we’re just obsessed with all things cosmic and extraterrestrial. Still, regardless, futuristic beauty looks are in full swing. More people are trying out shimmering alloy-inspired eyeshadows and highlighters that give the eyes and cheekbones a serious glow.

7. Chin-Length Bob

Donned by fashion-forward beauties like Zendaya, Jenna Ortega, and Hailey Bieber, we’re seeing an influx of choppy, textured chin-length cuts that add lots of layers and movement. Much like The Rachel 2.0, this hairstyle is a great choice for people wanting short hair that doesn’t look too thin.

8. Concealer Brows

Defined eyebrows? Ditch them. The bleached brow look has been taking over every editorial shoot and runway, and many have added colorful eyeshadows for all kinds of bold combinations. If you don’t want to commit to the bleached look, try it out with concealer first.

Just apply a liberal amount of full-coverage concealer to the back of your hand, thoroughly twist your spoolie through it, and repeatedly brush your brows upward. Keep reapplying your brows until they’re fully covered with concealer, and lock in the product with a touch of setting powder.

9. Upside-Down Eyeshadow

A great alternative to the pastel look, the upside-down eye makeup look applies bright eyeshadow underneath the lower lid while leaving the top lid free from any shadow. With this technique, you can still add a fun pop of color to the face without looking like you’re wearing too much makeup. Ditch the full-coverage foundation and pair this technique with a nice skin tint that keeps you naturally glowing.

10. Doe Eyes

The opposite of the siren/fox eye trend, the doe-eyed trend is a softer approach that makes the eyes look round, wide, and innocent. Seen on celebs like Sydney Sweeney and Zooey Deschanel, this look can be achieved with both black and white eyeliner—white applied to the waterline to add that “pop” effect, complete with bold mascara and large false lashes.
