How to Get Into the Beauty Industry

How to Get Into the Beauty Industry

When you think about launching your beauty career, you may want to work in a local salon or spa or you may want to become a celebrity makeup artist or hairstylist. No matter what beauty dreams you have, they all start in the same place: esthetician or cosmetology school. Let’s explore how getting a solid beauty education helps you launch the career you want.

How to Become a Hair Stylist

If you want to become a hairstylist, begin researching beauty schools and their cosmetology programs. It’s best to look for a state-approved beauty school that provides cosmetology licensing. After all, states provide cosmetology and esthetics requirements that you must meet in order to start your career. You must become a licensed cosmetologist before you can work in a salon or spa. Finding the right school is the first step you can take to becoming a hairstylist.

Once you enter cosmetology school, you’ll learn new skills and techniques. Sometimes, students enter beauty school thinking they’ll specialize in one area of their field, but find out later that they want to focus on something else entirely, and that’s alright! For example, you could enter beauty school thinking you’ll become a colorist, but decide you prefer cutting and styling hair when you’re halfway through your training. Stay open to different career specialties and opportunities throughout your cosmetology training. You never know which specialty you’ll end up enjoying most.

How to Become an Esthetician or Makeup Artist

If you want to work in the skin care industry or the makeup industry, you need to attend esthetician school. As with cosmetology, it’s best to attend a state-approved school that prepares you to earn your esthetician license. Once you’re in school, take your time to learn about different makeup and skin care products and procedures. Begin exploring which procedures you like performing and consider how you can use your new skills in your career after you graduate. Then you’ll have a stronger understanding of the makeup and skin care industries and how you can work within them.

How to Find a Job After You Graduate

Whether you want to get into the makeup industry, skin care industry, or hair industry, you’ve got your foot in the door by earning an esthetics or cosmetology license. Now you have to put that license to good use in the workforce. First, find out if your beauty school schedules visits to local salons and spas or educational talks that feature local cosmetologists and estheticians. Attend these visits and talks and take time to ask the stylists questions about their salon or spa and their experience in the beauty industry. The more you learn about your local salons and spas, the better prepared you’ll be when you enter the job market. If you would rather become a celebrity makeup artist or a beauty influencer, research the major players in those fields and see how they got where they are. No matter which career path you choose, you can start building your brand by posting images of your work to social media and setting up your resume and work portfolio. When you prepare for the beauty career you want during your training, you’re likely to achieve your beauty dreams.
