Beauty: A Recession-Proof Career

Makeup Artists Working With Clients

When the economy takes a nosedive, it doesn’t exactly put everyone in the best position career-wise. Real estate agents may struggle to sell houses, while restaurant owners may see a decline in sales due to people’s inability to eat out. However, there are a few careers out there that are virtually recession-proof. Some of the best recession-proof careers include health care professionals, law enforcement, and pharmacy technicians. Another example is educational professionals—people will always need to go to school, and that doesn’t stop during a recession. This same concept is true for beauty professionals.

While a recession may put other businesses at risk, you won’t have to worry as a beauty professional. People will always want to look their best, and no matter how the economy is doing, beauty salons are always thriving.

Beauty Careers by the Numbers

If you aren’t convinced yet that careers in the beauty industry are recession-proof, just take a look at the numbers. According to U.S. Census data, there were 18.6% more barber shops and 14.4% more beauty salons nationwide in 2009 than in 2007. U.S. News & World Report reported “hair stylist” as one of the 30 Best Careers in 2009.

It’s obvious that even during a recession, people still want to look and feel good. For someone who is unemployed, looking their best is even more important. They need to look polished and ready to interview for a potential new job. For this reason, beauty professionals won’t suffer in their career even during a recession.

Job Security as a Beauty Professional

Not only will you always have customers during a recession, but you also won’t have to worry about job security. As a beauty professional, you’ll always have your own book of business. While you may work in a salon, your regular customers stay loyal to you, and it’s almost like running your own business.

Jobs that involve caring for others also have one important thing in common: they aren’t easily automated or outsourced abroad. It’s like 37-year-old barber Israel Kakuriev says in an article in the Wall Street Journal: “You can’t send people to China or India for a haircut.”
