How to Use Financial Aid and FAFSA to Pay for Cosmetology or Esthetics School

Cosmetology school financial aid isn’t reserved for four-year universities, and it isn’t reserved for eighteen-year-olds fresh out of high school either. If you’ve assumed FAFSA doesn’t apply to a vocational program, or that your age or income rules you out, you’re working from information that’s holding you back from a career you actually want. Brillare Beauty Institute is a nonprofit school, which means FAFSA and Title IV funding are on the table here in a way they aren’t at every beauty school. Here’s what that actually looks like, step by step.

FAFSA Isn’t Just for College Freshmen

The biggest myth we hear from prospective students is that FAFSA for cosmetology school doesn’t exist, or that it’s somehow off-limits once you’re past your first few years out of high school. Neither is true. FAFSA has no age limit, and if you haven’t drawn on your Pell Grant eligibility, it’s still available to you regardless of when you graduated high school.

This matters most for our adult career changers, students who assumed financial aid was something they aged out of years ago. It also matters for first-time applicants who never realized a vocational program like ours qualifies at all. Nonprofit status is the key detail here: because Brillare Beauty Institute participates in Title IV federal aid, students can use federal loans and Pell Grants the same way they would at a traditional college. Many for-profit beauty schools can’t offer that.

Applying for FAFSA at Brillare Beauty Institute

Getting started with beauty school financial aid takes less time than most people expect once they have their documents together.

You’ll need a few things before you sit down to apply: your Social Security number, your most recent tax return or W-2 (or your parents’, if you’re a dependent student), and records of any untaxed income or current bank balances. From there, the process runs through the federal government directly, not through us.

Create an FSA ID at studentaid.gov, then complete the FAFSA form and list Brillare Beauty Institute as one of your schools. Submit before your intended start date, since processing and your award letter can take several weeks to come back. Once you have your Student Aid Report, our financial aid team can walk through it with you and confirm exactly what you’re eligible for before you enroll. If you have questions before you get that far, our admissions team is easy to reach and can point you in the right direction.

Timing to know: apply for FAFSA as early as possible ahead of your desired start date so your funding is in place before your first day, not scrambling to catch up after classes begin.

Ready to See What You Qualify For?

If the cost of cosmetology or esthetics school has been the thing holding you back, that barrier is more solvable than it looks. Our financial aid team will walk through your FAFSA results with you, explain what you qualify for, and help you understand exactly what enrollment costs before you commit to anything.

Explore Your Financial Aid Options

Types of Aid You May Qualify For

FAFSA doesn’t produce one flat answer. It determines your eligibility across a few different types of aid, and most students end up with some combination of them.

Pell Grants are need-based and don’t have to be repaid, making them the most valuable piece of the puzzle when you qualify. Subsidized federal loans are also need-based, and the government covers the interest while you’re enrolled. Unsubsidized federal loans are available regardless of financial need, though interest accrues from the start. Your Student Aid Report will show which of these you’re eligible for, and our team can explain how each one applies to your specific program and schedule.

What This Investment Actually Looks Like

The number that matters most isn’t your total tuition. It’s what your monthly payment looks like against what you’ll actually earn once you’re licensed.

Cosmetology school grants and federal aid change that math significantly. Once you know what your FAFSA award covers, you can compare a realistic monthly payment against what a licensed cosmetologist or esthetician can expect to earn, rather than looking only at the sticker price. You can see exact program costs on our cosmetology tuition and fees page or our esthetics tuition and fees page, and our financial aid team can help you run the numbers against your specific aid package before you decide.

Grants and Scholarships Beyond FAFSA

Cosmetology financial aid doesn’t stop at the federal level. Depending on your eligibility, there may be additional scholarship opportunities available on top of your FAFSA award. Our financial aid team can walk you through what’s currently available when you start the enrollment process.

Start With the FAFSA, Not With Assumptions

Most people who talk themselves out of cosmetology or esthetics school do it before they ever see what they’d actually qualify for. The FAFSA application takes an afternoon. What it tells you about your options could change the whole calculation.

Brillare Beauty Institute exists to make this path accessible, not just to talk about accessibility. As Tennessee and Missouri’s nonprofit, Title IV-eligible beauty school, we sit down with every prospective student and walk through their FAFSA results in plain language before they commit to anything. If cost has been the only thing standing between you and this career, let’s find out what your actual number looks like.
