How to Build a Skin Care Routine

Your simple skin care products have been doing the job, but if you’ve noticed that your skin hasn’t been flourishing, it might be time to find a routine that will take care of your needs. Keep reading this guide to find out how to create a routine that’ll maximize your cleansing, hydrating, and exfoliating with minimal product.

Why Should I Build a Skin Care Routine?

Before you go about investing in a new skin care routine, you should understand the basics. Whether you’re new to the skin care world or you’ve dabbled in it for a few years, you need to know what you want out of your skin. Are you seeking a face that’s soft to the touch? A glowy finish 24/7? Acne and dark spot treatment? There’s a ton of areas you could cover.

Good skin care doesn’t have to be too complicated, but if you’re concerned about addressing your issues in the most cost-effective way, you should be seeking high-quality products with active ingredients that are formulated to target specific concerns. For example, if dry skin is a constant for you, perhaps using a facial cleanser with hyaluronic acid is your best bet.

But if you’re not sure where your routine can be improved, especially if your current products seem to be working fine, find out how to identify when it’s just not working out.

Signs Your Current Skin Care Routine Isn’t Benefiting You

While it’s extremely rare (to nearly impossible) for your skin to build up immunity to products over time, you might have noticed that your regular skin care products aren’t attacking your skin as robustly as the first time you started using them. Perhaps you started using a particular eye cream with a specific amount of Vitamin C in an attempt to brighten your under-eye area, but you’re no longer noticing any differences in tone.

Consider switching it up! After all, skin care is constantly evolving, and you should be evolving with it. Here are signs you might need to make some routine changes:

  • You’re no longer getting results.
  • Breakouts are occurring more frequently.
  • You’re running through your product too quickly for the money you’ve spent.
  • Your products are near their expiration date.
  • Irritation bumps and discoloration are frequent.
  • Your skin is way too dry or oily.
  • Your makeup doesn’t stay.

If you can relate to any of these situations, or if you’re just curious to try something new, learn how to effectively manage your day and nighttime skin care routine.

How To Manage Your Day Time Skin Care

Your morning routine sets a huge precedent for the rest of the day. Before you apply your makeup and prepare to face the elements, your day time skin care routine should be designed to protect your skin from whatever comes its way.

Your Step-by-Step Routine

As you build a skin care routine, consider modeling your morning tasks a little like this:

  1. Start with a gentle facial cleanser – Assuming you cleansed the night prior, you can start your day with a calming cleanser that’ll remove the gunk from your beauty rest and start you with a clean slate. Depending on your skin type, you could use a general cleanser that works with all skin types or one specifically formulated for oily or dry skin.
  2. Use a toner – Toners work great on freshly cleansed skin and help set a foundation for the rest of the skin care process.
Apply your serums – Serums are efficient because they allow you to incorporate lots of different ingredients for your skin care needs, like antioxidants. They can also work as “actives,” with ingredients like salicylic acid being used to treat acne. Let serums soak in your skin for a couple of minutes to maximize effectiveness.
  3. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize – Moisturizing is a key component of any skin care routine. Depending on how dry or oily your skin is, you might have to pick a moisturizer that best compliments how you want your skin to feel.
  4. Apply quality sunscreen – Lots of skin care experts agree that applying sunscreen is the most important part of your skin care routine. Other skin care steps, while helpful, expose your skin barrier and leave your skin vulnerable to the harsh rays of the sun, which could make matters worse if you aren’t protecting yourself. A great rule of thumb is to apply a facial sunscreen with an SPF above 30 at least 15 minutes before stepping outside.

Your Night Care Routine

You’ve set the foundation for the day with your morning routine, but your nighttime skin care routine is equally as important. Think about all the elements your face comes in contact with during the day—not even considering how many times you touch your face in a day, even pollution and smog can leave undesirable particles on your face.

That’s why your night care routine should be focused on thoroughly cleansing and preparing for the next day.

Your Nighttime Routine

You might want to build a skin care routine that follows as such:

  1. Double cleanse – Use a multipurpose product like micellar water or an oil-based cleanser for your first round of cleansing. These can act as a makeup remover if you wear makeup during the day or just break up the natural dirt and dust particles that may accumulate.
  2. Use a general facial cleanser – Follow up on your first cleaning step with your regular facial cleanser.
  3. Apply your toner – Just like with your morning routine, regulate your skin’s pH balance and set a good tone for the rest of the process with a quality toner.
  4. Apply your serums – Also similar to your morning routine, if there are serums you enjoy, apply them after your toner at night.
  5. Grab your night cream – Night creams, like eye creams, tend to be pretty light compared to the average moisturizer and can be formulated with specific chemicals to target key problems.
  6. Exfoliate – You should chemically exfoliate two to three times a week to remove that top layer of dirt and buildup from your skin. The exfoliation process can be quite harsh (especially if used incorrectly), so you should avoid using it too frequently and preferably so at night to limit damage from sun exposure.
  7. Use your retinol/retinoids – Minimize the effects of aging with products heavy on retinol. You should be careful to use this sparingly on nights when you’re exfoliating so as not to damage your skin barrier.
  8. Moisturize – Finish up your routine by setting in these products with a good moisturizer. If you’ve exfoliated as well, your skin will be extra-receptive to your moisturizing agents.
